The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has launched Fentanyl Free America, a national initiative to combat the deadly synthetic opioid crisis. Fentanyl is responsible for nearly 50,000 deaths each year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
A National Response to a National Crisis
This campaign takes a comprehensive approach by targeting both the supply and demand for fentanyl. Key components of the initiative include:
Intensified enforcement operations
Expanded partnerships across federal and local agencies
Nationwide public awareness campaigns to educate and engage communities
Impact in 2025
Significant progress has already been reported. In fiscal year 2025:
The percentage of fentanyl pills containing a potentially lethal dose dropped from 76% in 2023 to just 29%
Fentanyl powder purity also decreased
More than 45 million fentanyl pills and 9,000 pounds of fentanyl powder were seized
An estimated 347 million deadly doses were removed from U.S. communities
These results reflect major disruption to fentanyl trafficking networks, including growing domestic production of fentanyl pills and increased trafficking of fentanyl powder.
Public Awareness and Community Involvement
In addition to enforcement, the DEA is encouraging public participation. Individuals, community leaders, employers, and organizations are invited to help raise awareness and prevent fentanyl-related deaths. Free educational materials—including posters, radio ads, and social media graphics—are available online.
